Athletes Who Suffered ACL Injuries and Recovered

According to Medscape, a part of WebMD, 200,000 ACL injuries occur each year in the United States. Of those, 95,000 are complete ACL ruptures, compared to partial tears and other injuires. Most injuries occur in athletes, especially those who play football, soccer, basketball, and skiing. However, this injury is possible in nearly every sport.

About This Project

I have been watching sports for as long as I remember.

Far too often, I'm watching a game and I see a player go down with an injury. The player has to be helped off by the trainer.

Eventually, I see that the player has a knee injury and is out for the season. It's usually a torn or ruptured ACL. I was looking to learn why they happen, how they happen, and why they seem to be so common, regardless of the sport.

I've also been on the radio announcing a women's

basketball game where an ACL injury occured, and it was one of the worst expereinces I've had on the air. A player went up for a rebound. Once she landed on the floor, she started screaming and crying. While the whole arena fell silent, I tried to put into words what was happening, but I had trouble knowing this player's collegiate career was over.

That is why I picked this topic and wanted to pursue it.
